Forms seminar was such a great experience. It is not every day you get that much passion and detail packed into four hours. I was shown Kempo 2 and worked on it for close to three hours then presented to the Sifus and other students. I think once I get the grasp of the flow I will really enjoy Kempo. Sifu Wilson taught our small group of three. I found her explanation of the movements very helpful, she has incredible flow.
These are such great opportunities to take advantage of. I am surprised at the low turnout. Much like boot camp these are chances that don’t come along very often. We have instructors ready to pour their hearts out for us. All we need to do is show up and produce the sweat and be receptive. I can’t think of many other organizations that open there vaults of knowledge and share so freely. Next seminar or event we should implement bring a buddy at least that would double attendance.
One thing we keep hearing is Sifu Brinker asking us to be cognizant of the now by asking ourselves. Where am I? What am I doing? And now Who am I?
The who am I really spoke to me. I have a bit of self image issues even though I am transforming my body right now. I have issues looking at myself in the mirror while doing forms. When I do it, it takes me out of the moment because I feel I don’t look like a martial artist at this point. Sifu Brinker really hit home when he said who am I. Then said he is always Bruce Lee. At first we all chuckled, but I have thought about this since. This is form of expression and being. Why not pattern yourself after the person you would like to be like. Play hockey like Wayne Gretzky. Then I remembered running track in the summer and whenever I trained in sprinting I was Carl Lewis. I mimicked his high knees and his hand span he used. I also learned to relax my face from watching him. I completely understand what Sifu was referring to now. By escaping and knowing who you are you will improve and take the pressure off yourself. Feels great to have such an epiphany.
